Can I Start A Blog About Myself?

can I start a blog about myself

If you’ve been thinking of starting a blog but not sure what to write about? You may have wondered ‘Can I start a blog about myself?’. This post is going to take a look at the pros and cons of writing a blog about yourself and your own experiences.

Can I Start A Blog About Myself?

When it comes to starting a blog, you can write about pretty much anything you like, including yourself. Lots of people find it easier to write about their own lived experiences rather than writing more general how-to types posts.

However, writing about yourself can come with its downsides too. Sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with the world can be liberating for some, but others find it tough, especially when trolls come along with unwelcome comments.

There is always the option to blog anonymously, of course, but typically audiences connect better when they can see what you look like.

This might lead you to ask the reasons why you want to start blogging in the first place.

If you simply want a creative outlet to share your thoughts and feelings and don’t mind whether anyone reads it or not then a simple anonymous blog with no social media might be the way to go.

If you want to share your own story and connect with and help others then doing this anonymously can be pretty tough.

Can I Start A Blog About Myself? Pros of blogging about yourself

There are plenty of pros to blogging about yourself, especially if you already have an online presence with a large following.

Mark Twain originally coined the phrase “write what you know” and who knows more about you, than well, you? If you want to write about yourself, your mental health, your family, your relationship and everything in between starting a blog about yourself can be a great way to do this.

And there’s nothing to say you can’t write about other things along the way, or even start or niched down blog later along the line when you feel happy and confident with blogging.

Starting a blog about yourself can also be a real asset if you already have a large audience on TikTok or Instagram. With most social media, you don’t own the content you post and it would all be lost if you were banned, hacked or the platform no longer existed.

Having your own blog or audience gives you options for retaining the audience you’ve built elsewhere should anything happen to your social media accounts.

Pros of blogging about yourself

  • Blogging about yourself, your life and your family sort of gives you carte blanche to write about whatever you like.
  • You could blog anonymously if you wanted to.
  • Writing about your own struggles can be therapeutic.
  • You can share your skills and talents with the world.
  • A personal blog can be a great way to look back on your life in five or ten years’ time.
  • Can be a great way to make money from home.

Writing about yourself can also help when it comes to getting more exposure. I’ve been featured in many newspapers talking about how my husband and I saved a huge house deposit on fairly modest incomes.

This helped raise the profile of my main personal finance website, helped me to look like an expert in my field and lead to more work, media appearances and even radio features.

Can I Start A Blog About Myself? Cons of blogging about yourself

There are also some downsides to blogging about yourself.

I’ve already touched on the vitriol some bloggers receive and that abuse does tend to be aimed at bloggers who share more of themselves online rather than those who are simply sharing make-up tips or kids’ days out.

There may also be times when you feel you don’t have anything interesting to say or there are things going on in your life that you don’t want to share online.

Some bloggers also don’t feel comfortable sharing images of their children online which I can completely understand, however, if your blog about yourself and your family it could make brands less likely to want to work with you.

If you’re looking to monetize your blog, blogging solely about yourself could make things trickier.

While I am a firm believer that there are ways to monetize any type of blog, some subjects, such as if you blog about your own mental health, may be harder to make money from than others.

Writing about your family life can also make it harder for posts to rank on Google.

For example:

‘Little Johnny’s 5th Birthday Party’

might do well for click-throughs from followers on social media who know and enjoy connecting with your family.

However, a post with that title is unlikely to rank on Google.

A post titled

‘How To Throw A Birthday Party For A Five-Year-Old’

would be much more likely to rank in Google and bring in long term, consistent traffic which could then be monetized in the form of ads.

Of course, even when you blog about yourself, there’s nothing to stop you from posting a mix of both personal content and content centred on getting articles to rank on Google.

Cons of blogging about yourself

  • Lots of bloggers on both social media and with a blog receive nasty comments from trolls and this can be hard to deal with.
  • Decisions about how much of your life to share and whether or not to share pictures of your children.
  • Some types of personal blogs can be harder to monetize than others.
  • It can be read by read by friends and family unless you choose to blog anonymously.

Can I Start A Blog About Myself? Final Thoughts

I want to finish this by saying yes, you can absolutely start a blog about yourself and your experiences.

Even if you feel like you have nothing new to say on a subject, you have your own unique perspective without even realising it and you might be surprised at just how much you have to bring to the table.

Starting a blog and putting yourself out there with others that you’ve admired for a long time can be scary, but it does get easier with time.

The blogging world has a huge sense of community and most bloggers, across all niches are a friendly and supportive bunch who believe in community over competition.

So why not give it a go and start a blog about yourself?
